The Eagles search for a backup quarterback this offseason nearly resulted in the return of Nick Foles — until he apparently shut them down.
According to a report from NFL insider Tyler Dunne the Eagles had interest in bringing Foles back, but Foles didn't want to return to Philadelphia, killing any potential deal that might have happened.
While the timing of the potential trade isn't mentioned, the Eagles did talk to the Chicago Bears during the Carson Wentz trade saga, so it is possible the discussion about Foles returning to the Eagles happened then.
Foles reportedly not wanting to come back to Philadelphia makes sense, but is surprising.
There is no question coming back to the Eagles would be a pressure-filled experience for Foles, who helped win the team their first Super Bowl in 2017 and nearly got them back in 2018. Even as the backup, the expectations for him would be through the roof as soon as (or if) he stepped on the field.
Even with those expectations, however, Foles has been very vocal about how much he loved living in the Philadelphia area during his time with the team. His career is once again at a bit of a breaking point, as he won't be back in Chicago and it seems the Bears might be having some trouble moving him. A return to Philadelphia might have been not only his best option, but his only option.
As for the Eagles, they moved on from Foles, signing Joe Flacco as the backup to Jalen Hurts.
