Should Eagles claim WR Antonio Gandy-Golden?

An intriguing name has made it's way onto the waiver wire as final cuts are taking place around the NFL.

The Washington Football Team has released receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden, according to multiple reports. Gandy-Golden was a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, but caught just one pass for three yards during his rookie season with Washington.

As will be the case as they monitor cuts around the league, the Eagles now have to decide if they want to put in a claim on Gandy-Golden.

There is certainly an argument for doing so. At 6-foot-4, 223 pounds, Gandy-Golden has elite size for the position.

Here is what I wrote about him prior to the 2020 NFL Draft:

Gandy-Golden has a dangerous combination of high upside and bust potential. There are plays where he looks like the next great receiver, as he stands 6-foot-4 and is tough to bring down after the catch. He has great hands, dropping only 12 passes — and only four last year — in 295 targets during his college career. The concern with Gandy-Golden is the level of competition he went against, and whether he was able to break so many tackles and win so many jump balls because he was just such a better athlete than everyone else — something that won't be the case in the NFL.

Obviously his rookie year in Washington did not go well, and the fact that Washington is willing to release him just one year after drafting him is a red flag.

The Eagles, however, might be willing to get more out of Gandy-Golden than Washington did.

Head coach Nick Sirianni specializes in coaching up receivers. That has been clear so far in camp, as pretty much every receiver on the roster has had a strong camp, besides Travis Fulgham. The Eagles could decide that they would rather bet on the upside of Gandy-Golden over Fulgham's upside.

Considering they are sixth in the waiver claim, chances are if they want to take a chance on Gandy-Golden, they will get that opportunity.
