Temple's head football coach Stan Drayton knows top NFL Draft prospect RB Bijan Robinson very well, as Drayton recruited and coached Robinson for two season as Texas.
Drayton, to no surprise, believes Robinson is certainly worthy of being a top-10 overall pick in this month's NFL Draft.
"Number one, you don't take him off of the field," Drayton told Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie on Monday's 94WIP Morning Show. "He's going to get you on schedule on first down, he can create an explosive play at any given point in time and he has the ability to protect the quarterback when you are throwing the football—he's very, very sharp in protection. Third down, you don't have to take that commodity off of the football field. He has great hands. He can create mismatches—and again, that same twitch to make you miss with the ball in his hands shows up when he's running routes and maybe you can create some mismatches that way."
Drayton went onto say Robinson has a chance of possibly staying healthy longer than most backs, due to his unique ability to make people miss at his size of 6'0", 220-pounds.
"He's over six foot, he's 220 pounds and he leads the country in making people miss," Drayton said. "You got a big back that can make people miss in small spaces. His first step is extremely quick and his movement is very effortless in that way. When you get a big back that is that elusive and with that type of explosion, they get the big play, it's pretty special...He's a guy who can maybe, hopefully transfer that trait to the NFL, he's a guy who can probably stay a little healthier a little longer. He's got this knack to make you miss in small space and if he can develop the big ability to protect himself on contact on all those things, he'll last long."
Drayton coached at Texas from 2017-2021, before taking the job as Temple head football coach. In 2021, Robinson rushed for 1,127 yards and 11 touchdowns and also caught 26 balls for 295 yards and four more scores as a sophomore.
The following season, with Drayton at Temple now, Robinson exploded for a 1,580 yard / 18 rushing touchdown season.
Of course, the Eagles own the 10th overall pick and the 30th overall pick in the first round of this year's draft and the majority of the conversation has become: Should and would Philadelphia take Robinson, a running back, at No. 10 overall?
Well, we will find out soon.
