Joe Giglio believes Howie Roseman and the Eagles should trade for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance, who in Giglio's mind, would be a better option to backup Jalen Hurts than Marcus Mariota.
"I want to trade for Trey Lance," Giglio said on Thursday's 94WIP Midday Show with Hugh Douglas. "I just think it is a unique upside play. It is taking a gamble on a guy that a couple of years ago people thought could be a star, when he came out of college. I don't know what happened in San Francisco.
"He is an athletic quarterback who can run. He's only 23-years-old. He's under contract for two more years. If I'm the Eagles I would trade for Trey Lance and I would rather have him as my backup quarterback than Marcus Mariota.
The 49ers named Sam Darnold as their backup to Brock Purdy on Wednesday, meaning Lance is the odd man out and could potentially be traded.
Lance is just 23-years-old and was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 draft. In 2022, Lance was named San Fran's starter over Jimmy Garoppolo but Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2, ultimately derailing his tenure with the 49ers and potentially his entire NFL career.
Mariota, 29, has struggled with the Eagles this preseason completed 16 of 28 passes for 144 yards, 0 TDs and 1 INT in two games.
Last season, as the starter for the Atlanta Falcons, Mariota went 5-8 in 13 starts with 15 TDs and 9 INTs.
