Marquise Goodwin never suited up as an Eagle, but he just saved them $4.28 million against the cap and netted them a draft pick by not even showing up.
The new NFL league year officially started on Wednesday, with a twist for Goodwin: because he was traded last offseason from San Francisco to Philly and then opted out of the 2020 season, the trade was, in essence, reversed, with his rights reverting back to the 49ers and the Birds getting back their 2021 seventh-round they sent to San Fran to get Goodwin.
Because of the language in the deal that reverses it, the Eagles not only save the $4,281,250 cap hit Goodwin would've had, they also get back the No. 232 overall pick.
The kicker: the 49ers cut Goodwin Wednesday afternoon, so the Birds could theoretically add him back to a receiver room that currently only has one wideout with more than two years of NFL experience – Alshon Jeffery, who is likely to be cut.
Goodwin, 30, has played seven seasons with the 49ers and Bills, and has 140 catches for 2,323 yards and 13 touchdowns.
