The Philadelphia Flyers selected Russian winger Matvei Michkov with the No. 7 overall pick in Wednesday's NHL Draft. The talented teenager, however, is under contract in Russia for three more years and the Philadelphia fan base likened the pick by the new Flyers' front office to Sam Hinkie's "Process" with the Sixers.
Al Morganti does not care for the comparison.
"What bothers me a little bit now is, there are people trying to spin this thing that the Flyers are doing this Hinkie thing," Morganti said on Thursday's 94WIP Midday Show with Hugh Douglas and Joe Giglio. "I don't find that at all. The Flyers didn't tank to get this...Well the difference is this isn't an engineered disgrace. It's not that way. Every night they're going to go out and try and win games...The Flyers got this pick and they didn't tank a game last year, they just weren't that good. I find that a little bit disturbing to me. There's no doubt they're in a rebuild, and I guess you can argue the semantics of it, but I don't think they have—like the Sixers—thrown up a big billboard that says no contend, whatever that word you use in boxing like the Sixers."
"In hockey you're somewhat [competitive] anyway because you're only a goal a way or whatever," Morganti continued. "If you outwork a team in a game you'll probably win your share. But to have a playoff chance, I think you're two years away."
