Danny Briere was asked by Joe DeCamara if the Flyers will take some lumps in a difficult 2023-24 season coming up and how the team plans to approach the season.
"It's very possible, yes," the Flyers' GM told the 94WIP Morning Show on Wednesday. "We've said all along we're going to let our young players play and develop. We did it with the forwards last year.
"We want to have the chance to do a little bit of the same thing with the defenseman. You know, let the guys like [Cam] York, [Egor] Zamula, [Ronnie] Attard, and [Emil] Andrae had a wonderful development camp last week...We want to see what our young guys have on defense. There are nights where it might be tough, but we're still going to compete. We don't believe in tanking. We want to build the right culture where the guys are playing hard every night, but there might be nights where it is a little tougher."
The Flyers are officially in a rebuild under Briere and new president Keith Jones. The franchise was able to select exciting young forward Matvei Michkov with the No. 7 overall pick in this year's draft, although Michkov won't play in the NHL for a few years as he is under contract in the KHL.
"We couldn't believe a player of his talent level was still available at number seven...Again, time will tell, but right now we're very excited about this selection," Briere said.
