New Phillies GM Sam Fuld joined Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie on Thursday's 94WIP Midday Show and spoke highly of the club's improved pitching.
"They're really good so far, I'll tell you what," Fuld said. "We have difficult decisions ahead of us, but they're good ones to have. Our starting pitching was, by and large, pretty good last year and I think we have done nothing but fortify that starting rotation with adding Matt Moore and Chase Anderson. So I feel really good about our starting situation knowing that we'll have to navigate 162 games instead of 60, with some work load considerations to consider throughout the year.
"Our bullpen, it feels like there's a different vibe to it. There's a lot of confidence, which I think if you suddenly have two, three, four guys throwing 97, 98, 100 that'll help your confidence out right away. But these guys have been around the zone with it too. Our stuff is different there, I feel really optimistic about what kind of value they're going to bring this year."
Fuld was asked if he understands the task he is about to embark on, being a general manager of a professional sports franchise in a city like Philadelphia and the pressure that comes from it.
"Yeah, I understand the magnitude of it, I do," Fuld said. "I certainly received my fair share of boos as a player, that's what happens when you're a .220 career hitter so I'm used to that in that way. I like to believe I have good perspective and for me what matters most in my life is my family. At the end of the day I know that I'm going to put everything on the line and I'm trying to navigate the family, work life balance. But I'm working really hard, I believe in my abilities, I believe in the people we have around here. I recognize that this is a city that has huge expectations and that's what great about it. And I recognize not everybody can meet those expectations all of the time. At the end of the day if I'm working hard and I've got my values in order, I can sleep well at night."
