J.T. Realmuto to make spring training debut for Phillies Tuesday night

J.T. Realmuto has stressed throughout spring training that he would be ready for Opening Day, and the Phillies star is now taking a big step toward making that a reality.

Realmuto, who has been sidelined since suffering a fractured right thumb on Feb. 12, is in Philadelphia's lineup for Tuesday night's spring training game, and will be behind the plate.

It will be the first game action of the spring for Realmuto, who suffered the fracture while blocking a pitch in camp. He had the cast removed earlier this month and was on track to make his debut as a DH this past weekend, but was scratched with body soreness after taking multiple at-bats in a simulated game the day before.

Manager Joe Girardi previously said he would need to see Realmuto behind the plate in a game before deciding whether he would be ready for Opening Day, which is a week from Thursday.

Realmuto recently signed a five-year, $115.5 million deal with the Phillies, and hit .266 with 11 home runs in the shortened 2020 season.
