Philadelphia Phillies managing partner John Middleton signed superstar Bryce Harper to a remarkable 13-year, $330 million contract in March of 2019.
Somehow, three and a half years later, the massive deal feels like a discount, something Middleton joked with Harper about after the Phillies won the National League pennant on Sunday.
Harper, 30, is having one of the greatest postseasons in Major League Baseball history, etching himself into Philadelphia sports lure as one of the city's greatest athletes.
The reigning National League MVP is 18-43 (.419) with six doubles, five homers, and 11 RBI in 11 playoff games. His OPS is a historic 1.351, which would be the 6th highest postseason OPS ever.
To cap it off, trailing by one run in the 8th inning of Game 5 of the NLCS on Sunday and a runner on first, Harper—amazingly—belted a two-run home run to give the Phillies the lead. It was a life defining moment for the superstar.
Back in 2017, John Middleton came on 94WIP and said, "We're gonna get that trophy back or I'm gonna die trying." In the 2022 offseason Middleton went over the luxury for the first time in franchise history. And now, they're back in the World Series.
