Zack Wheeler has been the only constant of the 2024 NL Cy Young race. Will the consistency be enough to win the franchise’s first Cy Young in 14 years?
When BetMGM’s MLB odds for Cy Young winner opened over the winter, Wheeler had the second-shortest odds at +1000 behind only Spencer Strider (+500) and ahead of Logan Webb (+1200), Yoshinobu Yamamoto (+1400), Zac Gallen (+1400), and Max Fried (+1400).
None of those five players has remained among the favorites — and in favor with the public — throughout the entire season. And while Wheeler has been the favorite for only a few weeks of the season — and never had the largest ticket or handle shares — he’s the only pitcher to sit among the contenders the entire season.
After rebounding from his rough start against the New York Yankees on July 29 by allowing only two runs over 14 innings of his last two starts, Wheeler (+200) jumped Paul Skenes (+300) and is closing the gap on Chris Sale (-105). No other player has shorter odds than +2500.
Wheeler has remained in the top five in odds, ticket share, and handle share since Opening Day. His ticket share of 6.8% ranks fourth, handle share of 12% ranks third. Skenes leads all players in both categories — 16.2% of the tickets and 19.9% of the handle — and is BetMGM’s biggest liability in NL Cy Young betting.
