Phillies acquire closer Carlos Estevez
The Philadelphia Phillies are acquiring closer Carlos Estevez from the Los Angeles Angels for top pitching prospects George Klassen and Samuel Aldegheri, the Phillies announced on Saturday.
Estevez, 31, was an All-Star in 2023 and is 1-3 this season with a 2.38 ERA with 20 saves in 34 games. He has 32 strikeouts and just five walks in 34.0 innings.
According to the Phillies' updated prospect rankings, Klassen is ranked No. 7, while Aldegheri is No. 12, per Todd Zolecki.
The move comes one day after the Phillies acquired 29-year-old outfielder Austin Hays from the Orioles for relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez and outfielder Cristian Pache.
"He can play left field. This is the platoon partner for Brandon Marsh. I like it, I'm good with this. But here's what it tells me, there's another bigger move coming," Giglio said reacting to the trade for Hays on Friday's on the 94WIP Midday Show. "It feels like without Pache maybe [Johan] Rojas can move to the Pache role and get another center fielder in here...I think this is a precursor to another move."
