Thomson considering altering between Turner, Schwarber at leadoff spot
94WIP Morning Show debates the idea
Phillies manager Rob Thomson said on Sunday's radio broadcast on 94.1 WIP-FM that he is considering altering the team's leadoff hitter this season, batting Trea Turner atop the lineup vs. lefties and Kyle Schwarber vs. righties.
The 94WIP Morning Show debated the idea on Monday's 94WIP Morning Show, three days before Opening Day.
Joe DeCamara: "Fine, no problem! 2008 Phils, the whole season they flip flopped the two hitter and the six hitter. When it was a left-handed pitcher Jayson Werth batted two, Shane Victorino batted sixth. When it was a right-handed pitcher Shane Victorino batted two, Jayson Werth batted sixth."
Jon Ritchie: "I've never been as worried about the batting lineup as most. Having two lead off guys with different strengths and weaknesses over the course of a 162-game season, it sounds kind of like a really good idea. I'm surprised it's not leaned into more often because it seems practical."
James Seltzer: "Just pick a line up. It's not the end of the world, I'm not freaking out about it. But like for a team that has such questions about it and it's been a thing all offseason, commit to a lineup. Stop moving these guys around. Give them a chance to get comfortable in a spot and see if that lineup works. It just seems Mickey Mouse."
Rhea Hughes: "I see it as overthinking it. To me, it's the argument like if you have two starting quarterbacks you don't have one...It's not common place to flip lead off...I just think the time to make this decision was in Spring Training...I just think it's ridiculous."
