In a series of roster moves on Monday, the Phillies promoted Odubel Herrera to play centerfield and optioned Mickey Moniak. Spencer Howard was also optioned as well.
"We just felt it was time," said manager Joe Girardi.
The 29-year-old Herrera joins the Phillies 40-man roster for the first time since 2019. He recently served an 85-game suspension for violating the MLB-MLBPA joint domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy. He was arrested in May 2019 on domestic violence charges that were later dismissed. Herrera underwent counseling in Philadelphia and also did virtual sessions.
In 21 games this season, the combination of Adam Haseley, Roman Quinn and Mickey Moniak has combined for just nine hits. The Phillies center fielders are batting .114/.213/.177 in 89 plate appearances.
Last Monday, Dave Dombrowski said he is open to trading for an upgrade at centerfield, but that the team will explore all its internal options first.
