After seeing Alec Bohm rake to the tune of a .338 batting average as a rookie in the shortened 2020 season, coaches and fans were naturally going to have lofty expectations for the third baseman in his sophomore campaign. As it turns out, the sophomore slump hit Bohm pretty darn hard, culminating in some pretty disappointing news on Sunday.

With Rhys Hoskins making his long-awaited return from the 10-day injured list, the Phillies decided to send Bohm down to Triple-A in order to make room.

Bohm is slashing .245/.302/.342 to this point in the season, and that last figure there — the slugging percentage — is a bottom-10 figure in the National League. That's not what you want out of a player whose offense is supposed to be the strong suit of his game, especially when defense is such a liability. And anyone who has watched the Phillies know that this is exactly the case for Bohm, whose defensive WAR is in the bottom five in the NL and whose 15 errors at third base is second only to Rafael Devers at the position across MLB.

The Phillies Twitter community reacted with mixed emotions, among them frustration and disappointment upon hearing the somewhat surprising news.

In better news... Rhys is back! He'll bat fifth in Sunday's game against the Padres in a rubber match to decide the series.
