Giglio on Phillies' trade for Austin Hays: 'Another bigger move coming'

Joe Giglio reacted to the Phillies' acquisition of outfielder Austin Hays from the Orioles for Seranthony Dominguez and Cristian Pache on Friday.

"[Mays] can play left field. This is the platoon partner for Brandon Marsh. I like it, I'm good with this. But here's what it tells me, there's another bigger move coming," Giglio reacted on the 94WIP Midday Show. "Well they just subtracted from their bullpen and I think it means they could also be getting another center fielder. It feels like without Pache maybe [Johan] Rojas can move to the Pache role and get another center fielder in here...I think this is the precursor to another move."

94WIP's Jack Fritz echoed a similar sentiment.

Hays is hitting .328/.394/.500 against left-handed pitchers and will likely platoon in the outfield with Brandon Marsh.

Hays, who was an All-Star last year, is slashing .255/.316/.395 this season with three home runs and 14 RBI.

Hays, who makes $2.2 million, is under team control for the rest of 2024 and the 2025 season, as well.

As for Dominguez, he has spent his entire career with the Phillies, signing with the club in 2011 as a free-agent teenager for $25,000.

The 29-year-old reliever has an $8 million club option with a $500,000 buyout for next season.

"It is giving up on Dominguez at his lowest value," Giglio added.
