Report: Kevin Long to join Phillies as hitting coach


Add another ex-Yankee to Joe Girardi’s coaching staff.

Per multiple reports, Kevin Long will be joining Girardi’s staff as the Phillies’ new hitting coach, joining bench coach Rob Thomson and pitching coach Caleb Cotham as former Bombers players or coaches from Girardi’s tenure in the Bronx now in Philly.

Long, 54, has been the Nationals’ hitting coach since 2018, and prior to that was the hitting coach for the Yankees from 2007-14 – all but one of those seasons as part of Girardi’s staff – and the Mets from 2015-17.

According to Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post, Long, who returned for 2021 on a one-year deal, was open to again returning to the Nationals, but wanted to investigate all opportunities – and ironically, he will be replacing a protégé in Joe Dillon, who was dismissed after two seasons as Phillies hitting coach earlier this month. Dillon was Long’s assistant in DC for two seasons prior to leaving for Philly after the Nats won the 2019 World Series.
