Ruben Amaro Jr. says Trea Turner is poised for a big 2025

Trea Turner is entering his third season as a Phillie and the pressure is mounting.

"This guy wants to be great," former Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said on Wednesday's 94WIP Morning Show.

"He is not a vocal guy. He doesn't show a lot of emotion. I think a lot of people here in Philadelphia like people who show emotion.

"And I think that's one of the reasons why the expectation on Trea is a little higher...I think this is going to be a really big year for him in a lot of ways...And there's a little heat on him. I think he also knows that if he doesn't play well at shortstop this year that he may not be the shortstop for the Phillies much longer.

"He's working his ass off with [infield coach] Bobby Dickerson every single day. Oh they yell at each other, they play with each other. It's fun to watch...That work that he does in that half field is my favorite time to watch guys work...These guys get after it, man...Listen, for those that think there is no urgency on this team you are absolutely in the wrong. Unequivocally in the wrong because I know what they do and I know the work that they put in."

Turner, 31, signed an 11-year contract worth $300 million with Philadelphia in December of 2022.

As a Phillie, Turner is slashing .279/.328/.463 with 47 homers, 60 doubles, 49 stolen bases, 72 walks and 248 strikeouts in two seasons. He's had 6.5 cumulative offensive WAR over that time period.

Defensively, he's committed 40 errors and is focusing on improving that part of his game this offseason.
