Zion to Philly is ridiculous, but not impossible

As we get ready for the 2019 NCAA Tournament and the official coming out party for the NBA's extremely likely No. 1 overall pick Zion Willamson, do not forget—the Sixers have a chance to win the pick.

In order to acquire the No. 1 overall pick to select the now ex-76er Markelle Fultz in 2017, the now ex-Sixers GM Bryan Colangelo traded the No. 3 overall pick and a future-first—the Los Angeles' Lakers pick, only if it fell between No. 2 and No. 5. The Lakers obtained the No. 10 pick in 2018, so Philly kept the pick (Mikal Bridges, who they traded for Zhaire Smith and another pick).

Since the Lakers' pick did not fall in the No. 2 though No. 5 range and stayed with the Sixers, the Celtics are slated receive the Sacramento Kings' first-round pick in 2019.

However, there is a No. 1 overall protection on the aforementioned Kings pick, meaning if the Kings do win the No. 1 overall pick in the lottery, the Sixers will amazingly keep the pick.

Currently, Sacramento—while having a surprisingly impressive season—will miss the playoffs and enter the 2019 NBA Draft Lottery, giving Philly at least some hope. The Kings are 34-36 and 7.0 games back of a playoff spot in the West with just 10 games to go. As it stands now, Sacramento will have the best record among 2019 NBA lottery teams, giving them a 0.5 percent chance of winning the No. 1 overall pick.

So all of this is to say, the Sixers will have somewhere around a 0.5 percent chance at adding Zion Williamson to their already stacked roster. Imagine a 2019 lineup of: Ben Simmons, Jimmy Butler, Tobias Harris, Zion Williamson, and Joel Embiid. Are you kidding me?

Williamson, 18, is maybe the most hyped basketball teenager since LeBron James. In 29 games at Duke this season, Williamson has averaged 22.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 1.8 blocks while shooting a ridiculous 69.3-percent from the field, 65.4-percent from the line, and a respectively 31.5-percent from three. The 6-7, 285 pound high-flying forward is a walking highlight reel and will almost certainly have the NCAA Tournament ratings soaring beginning this week.
