CALLING ALL WOMEN OF HAMPTON ROADS! After a wildly successful Women Build Week (WBW) in 2020, we’re calling on YOU to once again pick up your hammers and nail guns for a deserving, low-income family this Spring!

Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads (Habitat SHR) coordinates Women Build Week which is an annual fundraising event to raise awareness of the need for affordable housing. 10 teams of up to 12 women help build a home with a hard-working, low-income family. During the event, Habitat SHR inspires women from all walks of life to come together and empower one another to build while encouraging women to choose the trades as a career choice. Habitat SHR also uses the event to promote woman-owned/focused businesses by offering the opportunity to provide promotional items for 150 SWAG bags being handed out to the women builders.

Habitat SHR’s primary mission is to build affordable homes that strengthen families and communities in South Hampton Roads. Though the home may be purchased by one family, the impact reaches out into the community as well. The organization takes a run down home, removes it and builds a new home which increases the value of the neighborhood and increases the tax base for the city.

Because the mortgage costs to the homebuyer will be about $400-$500 less than they are paying in rent now, they will have more expendable income to use in the community. They will also be able to afford better healthcare, healthier foods, and better childcare for their family. Studies have also found that a child raised in a home owned by their family are 25% more likely to graduate from high school, twice as likely to graduate from college, and 60% more likely to become homeowners themselves within 10 years of moving from their family’s home. Habitat SHR is helping to break the cycle of generational poverty.
