George Segal, who has a long list of credits including an Oscar-nominated turn in the 1966 film “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” has died. He was 87.
Segal’s wife Sonia confirmed the news. “The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery,” she said in a statement, according to Variety.
"I am saddened by the fact that my close friend and client of many years has passed away," longtime manager Abe Hoch said in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter. "I will miss his warmth, humor, camaraderie and friendship. He was a wonderful human."
The renowned actor most recently appeared as a series regular on the ABC sitcom “The Goldbergs.”
On the 1980s-themed series, Segal protrayed family patriarch Albert "Pops" Solomon alongside co-stars Jeff Garlin and Wendi McClendon-Covey. The last episode he filmed prior to his death is set to air on April 7th, reported Deadline.
One of Segal's other best-known television roles was playing magazine publisher Jack Gallo on the NBC sitcom "Just Shoot Me!" from 1997 - 2003. Other television credits include the late '80s detective drama "Murphy's Law," the CBS sitcom "Take Five, and a guest-starring stint as talent manager Murray Berenson on HBO's "Entourage," among others.
In 1966, Segal's turn as a young college professor that engages in a night of psychological mindgames with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
His other film credits include "Bye Bye Braverman,” "The Owl and the Pussycat," “A Touch of Class,” "California Split," “The Hot Rock," “Fun With Dick and Jane," "Look Who's Talking," and "The Mirror Has Two Faces."
Born in Great Neck, New York in 1934, Segal studied at the Actor's Studio and started his career with guest roles on TV shows such as "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour" and "Arrest and Trial."
Segal is survived by his wife Sonia, and two daughters, Polly and Elizabeth.
