Davis’ daughter, Jasmin, shared the news via social media telling fans her father passed away on May 24.
“My dad passed away this evening through the coronavirus,” Jasmin wrote. “He made a lot of people happy with his laughter and smile, his happy spirit, love and especially through his music. He gave so much to the world! Please give him the last round of applause. We will miss him dearly.”
Milli Vanilli originally rose to fame in the 1980s with group members Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan and their debut album, All Or Nothing, which was rebranded as Girl You Know It’s True a year later. The album won a GRAMMY in 1990.
Pilatus and Morvan found themselves in hot water when rumors started surfacing that they were not the true voices behind the music, which turned out to be true. The duo was forced to hand back their GRAMMY and suffered many consequences following the news.
Charles Shaw, Brad Howell and Davis were revealed as the real voices behind the music, with the producer admitting Pilatus and Morvan were merely male models he hired to lip sync the tune he had already recorded with Shaw, Howell and Davis.
After the scandal, John and Brad started performing as The Real Milli Vanilli, but did not experience as much success.
“R.I.P brother @johndavisrmv Can’t believe it, thanks for all the love you’ve spread through out the years, from the edge of the stage,” Morvan tweeted. “You and I had a great run, it was fun to celebrate life with the help of music. Peace one love Your voice will live on. Play it loud everybody.”
