Panik, axed off the Giants’ roster on Tuesday, fills an immediate need for the Mets after incumbent second baseman Robinson Cano tore his left hamstring.  New York, winners of nine of the last 10, and are now 19-6 since the All-Star break. In the process, the Mets have flown up the wild-card standings, sitting half a game out of the second spot with a 59-56 record.

For Panik, landing in Queens is a homecoming. The former Giant was born in Yonkers, NY, and went to school at St. John’s.
