Does Deshaun Watson still have a future with the Houston Texans?
The decision on who the Texans hire as their next head coach may apparently play a significant role in whether or not Watson remains on the team.
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk has the scoop:
"Rumors already are circulating, and we’ve already heard them from multiple different people, that Watson has quietly broached with teammates the possibility of requesting a trade. If that’s happening, it may just be a strategic effort to ensure his views are respected by ownership. Regardless, it raises the stakes and crosses a bridge and potentially sets the foundation for Watson eventually to decide that he’d like to continue his career elsewhere."
The Texans did extend Watson for four more years prior to the start of the 2020 season with a $156 million contract with $73.7 million guaranteed, and trading him would result in a $21.6 million cap hit for the 2021 season – which is certainly tradeable.
The Texans traded away many draft picks under Bill O’Brien, and Watson would surely be able to get them a hefty return – which they will need since they will be forced to rebuild.
O’Brien, who traded Hopkins’ best weapon in DeAndre Hopkins last year, was fired as head coach and GM after an 0-4 start this season.
Houston recently hired former Patriots executive Nick Caserio as the general manager, who will be tasked with finding the new head coach.
Shortly after the Caserio hire, Watson tweeted “some things never change,” but fans were unsure if that was related to the Texans hire or perhaps the ruling in the Jacob Blake case – where it was announced the police officer in his shooting would not be charged.
Regardless, there still seems to be some doubt hanging over Watson’s future in Houston – just how legitimate the doubt is remains to be seen.
