Florida star Keyontae Johnson is in medically induced coma, says grandfather

Florida Gators star Keyontae Johnson, who was hospitalized after collapsing on the court during a game on Saturday, has been put into a medically induced coma, according to his grandfather, Larry DeJarnett.

DeJarnett shared this update with USA Today on Monday in a phone interview, adding that his grandson was transported to a hospital in Gainesville, Florida after being treated in Tallahassee – where the team was playing against Florida State.

DeJarnett said doctors were hopeful they could bring him out of the coma Monday afternoon.

“They’re just not sure,” he said. “He may have had activity in the brain, so they induced the coma. They put him on the medication to keep him sedated.”

Johnson, who is the team’s leading scorer and rebounder this season and was the SEC’s preseason player of the year, had just completed an emphatic dunk while in transition before he fell to the floor. He was taken off the floor on a stretcher and brough to the hospital.

He was reportedly in “critical, but stable” condition upon first being admitted into the hospital.

What caused Johnson to collapse is still undetermined.

According to The Associated Press, Johnson had tested positive for COVID-19 during the summer, as did several other teammates, but it is unclear if his condition is COVID related.
