Patrick Mahomes is putting together an MVP season, but there was one play in particular during Sunday’s 33-27 win over the Miami Dolphins that likely won’t make the highlight reel.
During the first quarter on a third-and-12, Mahomes dropped back to pass but quickly found himself under pressure. With Emmanuel Ogbah to his right, Mahomes spun around but could not move left because Jerome Baker was there, so he began running backwards.
He was ultimately sacked for a loss of 30 yards. According to ESPN Stats and Info, Mahomes became the first player to lose 30-plus yards on a sack without fumbling since Phil Simms did so in 1979.
On Monday, Mahomes was asked on Kansas City’s 610 Sports Radio’s “The Drive” just exactly what in the world was he was trying to do on what was tied for the longest sack in recorded league history.
“Oh God, the longest one in history?” Mahomes asked. “It was a play I thought I can outrun the linebacker to the edge. All I was trying to do was get outside the pocket at that point and throw the ball away. I’ve done it before. But he was a little faster than I was and was able to get after my feet.”
The Chiefs were forced to punt, obviously, and Mahomes was subject to some rare ridicule on social media, which was short-lived, of course.
Despite the 30-yard sack, the two interceptions and an early 10-0 deficit, the Chiefs were still able to bounce back and score 30 unanswered points and win the game, 33-27, and clinch the AFC West for the fifth consecutive year.
The win, coupled with the Steelers’ loss, now puts the Chiefs in the driver’s seat to control their own destiny for the No. 1 seed in the AFC – which is the only seed that gets a bye this year.
“Yeah, it is important,” Mahomes said. “We believe that no matter what happened [with COVID], we’d have a chance to find ways to win games and make our run. To be the No. 1 seed now, you gotta make sure you hold onto it, get that bye, get everyone healthy … in the AFC you’re gonna play a great team no matter [the seed].”
