Richard Sherman famously trolled Tom Brady after beating him in 2012, only for Brady to repay the favor two years later in Super Bowl XLIX. Soon, the longtime rivals may be teammates on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the free-agent cornerback is headed to Tampa for a workout with the Bucs on Tuesday. A five-time Pro Bowler who once led the league in interceptions, Sherman would be a welcome addition to a struggling Bucs secondary that has let up the most passing yards in football this season (338.3 per game).
A likely Hall of Famer and former Super Bowl champion with the Seahawks, Sherman has had a tumultuous few months following his arrest on charges of driving under the influence, reckless endangerment of roadway workers, second-degree criminal trespass, resisting arrest and third-degree criminal mischief in July. The 33-year-old allegedly consumed two bottles of hard liquor and threatened suicide before unsuccessfully trying to break open the front door of his father-in-law’s home in suburban Seattle. Following the troubling incident, Sherman apologized for his behavior while vowing to seek help for his “mental and emotional health.” Last week, Sherman expressed to Doug Farrar of USA Today that he didn’t want his NFL legacy to be tarnished by a “momentary lapse.”
Before his tryout with Tampa Bay, Sherman had also garnered interest from the Panthers, who lost promising rookie Jaycee Horn to a broken foot Thursday night. However, Carolina instead pivoted to C.J. Henderson, acquiring the former first-round pick from Jacksonville in a trade earlier this week.
Drafted out of Stanford in 2011, Sherman has amassed 483 career tackles, five forced fumbles and 36 interceptions—the most among active players—over 139 NFL appearances for the Seahawks and 49ers. Tampa Bay’s shorthanded secondary is running on fumes right now with injuries to Sean Murphy-Bunting (elbow), Jamel Dean (knee) and Carlton Davis (abdomen, ribs), among others. Coming off their first loss since Week 12 of last season, the reigning Super Bowl champs are looking to get back in the win column Sunday night against the Patriots in Brady’s highly-anticipated return to Foxboro.
