Andre Iguodala announces he will return Saturday vs. Magic

It took him 40 games, but Andre Iguodala is finally ready for showtime.

On Friday, Iguodala announced on his “Point Forward” podcast that he’ll be making his season debut on Saturday against the Orlando Magic. He's sure get a huge ovation from Dub Nation at Chase Center.

The Warriors have been patient with Iguodala, who turns 39 later this month and is about to embark on his 19th season. Last year, he dealt with hip, knee and back issues that cropped up after he was overused in the second half of the season.

“I got some big news, fam,” Iguodala said. “It’s Point Forward Friday. We got 24 hours until I step on the court, man. It’s a go. Officially announcing it on Point Forward. I hope the fanbase is excited. I’m a little nervous but I’m also excited. I try to play it cool, calm and collected all the time, but excited to get there on the court. It’s finally happened. A lot of folks been asking. Patience is a virtue and now we’re here.”

Before Wednesday night’s game against the Detroit Pistons, Iguodala put on a game jersey during an on-court workout at Chase Center. He moved around fluidly and looked like he was getting his mental ready for a gameday experience.

The Warriors and Iguodala have been adamant that he’s not just here this season to be an extra coach. They believe he can help contribute to a repeat run in 2023.

ESPN's Kendra Andrews shared comments from coach Steve Kerr during Friday's practice.

Iguodala’s return comes at a time when the Warriors are decimated by injury in the frontcourt. Andrew Wiggins is on the verge of returning after a 15-game absence, but forwards Jonathan Kuminga (right foot sprain) and JaMyChal Green (leg infection) remain out, along with center James Wiseman (ankle sprain).

Iguodala isn’t much of a scorer but is intimately familiar with Kerr’s offense and can still be a valuable playmaker. His defense and ability to switch defenders will probably be his biggest asset, as Kerr often used him in closing lineups last season when healthy. Iguodala’s return could eat into playing time for two-way forward Anthony Lamb, second-year wing Moses Moody and rookie Patrick Baldwin Jr.

Steph Curry (left shoulder) is targeting a return next Friday when the Warriors visit the San Antonio Spurs, so the dynasty core of Iguodala, Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson could be reunited for the second half of the season.
