Anthony Slater breaks down how Warriors see roster entering summer
If there's anyone who knows where the Warriors stand heading into the season, it's Anthony Slater.
Slater joined the Morning Roast Wednesday morning to discuss the team's outlook. It appears most of their business is concluded, but could there be a major move yet to come? Slater assessed and said he thinks the Warriors like where they're at right now.
"You look at the roster, it reminds me a little of last year which probably scares some people but right like 12 guys where you're like, 'That could be a rotation guy, that could be a rotation guy,'" Slater said. "I think we all understand that they're a bigger name away from real noise. But they feel positioned to potentially get in that mix. Obviously they're in the hunt for Markkanen, if that ever materializes, but beyond that, I don't think it's for sure through the next trade deadline, but I think they're okay going to camp with this group."
Slater reaffirmed that the August 6 date when Markkanen becomes extension eligible is a major point for these discussions. If he signs an extension then, he could be dealt exactly on the February 6 trade deadline. If he signs after, he can't be traded this season. If he doesn't sign at all, well... it's open season on trade talks.
He also pointed out that the Warriors have "shown more of an appetite to trade the first rounders," which teams see as very appealing in a post-Stephen Curry era.
It does seem like it's Markkanen or bust for the summer, though. Slater said the Warriors don't seem to be dying to go after Brandon Ingram, nor are they interested in Zach Lavine and his monstrous contract.
So, as it stands, who might start come day one?
"Assume really clean health, and everybody's playing well, I'll go Steph, De'Anthony Melton, Wiggins, Kuminga, and Draymond," Slater said.
There's plenty of summer and an Olympics run yet to come, but that's what the Warriors are looking at as things stand. Listen to the full interview above.
