Baron Davis: 'We Believe' Warriors were like Bad Boy Records, documentary in the works

As epic as the dynasty run has been for the Warriors the past nine years, there’s always going to be something special about the “We Believe” era for the franchise.

Baron Davis was in the house on Wednesday evening at Chase Center to see Steph Curry and the Dubs keep their season alive with a win over LeBron James and Lakers.

On the 16-year anniversary of his iconic dunk over Andrei Kirilenko in the second round of the playoffs, Baron Davis joined 95.7 The Game’s “The Morning Roast” to reminisce about that memorable playoff run and give an update on a documentary that’s in the works.

Davis was the point guard on the 2007 squad which snuck into the postseason to end a miserable 13-year playoff drought. Pretty much the whole team is remembered fondly now, including Jason Richardson, Stephen Jackson, Al Harrington, Andris Biedrins, Monta Ellis, Matt Barnes, Mikael Pietrus, Kelenna Azubuike and Adonal Foyle.

“We was real rockstars,” Davis told hosts Bonta Hill and Joe Shasky. “Real personalities. It’s a lot different. I always say when I was playing with the Warriors, you’re almost like the Beatles or Bad Boy Records every time we went out, because we embraced the fans, we embraced the media. We never ran from no fight, no battle, on or off the court. It was kinda like this whole mentality – this hip-hop mentality, this renegade mentality that I think made us rockstars.”

The atmosphere was unmatched inside Oracle Arena in Oakland for those first-round games against the 67-win Dallas Mavericks when the Warriors became the third No. 8 seed to ever take down a No. 1 seed in the NBA playoffs. Though the Warriors lost to the Utah Jazz in the next round, Davis’ dunk in Game 3 will be remembered forever by Dub Nation.

Nowadays, Jackson and Barnes are a major force in the sports media space with their “All The Smoke” podcast. Coach Don Nelson is growing Nellie Kush in Hawaii while Harrington’s ViolaBrand cannabis company is a nationwide brand. Davis is heading up Black Santa, a media company designed to create storytelling for children.

Davis is also working on a We Believe documentary.

“That’s something that we’re working on," Davis said. "It’s a work in progress. I gotta get out to Hawaii so I can interview Nellie. I think it’s gonna be good, man. We got a lot of guys – all the guys signed up pretty much. We’re ready to go, now we gotta start working out the necessary particulars, you know. Stak (Jackson) and Matt (Barnes), they’re expensive now.”

Last year, Barnes joked with 95.7 The Game that Baron was holding up the project, so fans aren’t the only ones who wanna see it. Whenever it comes out, the documentary will surely be a huge hit in the Bay Area and beyond.
