Bob Myers proud of Warriors All-Stars Steph Curry, Andrew Wiggins

Don’t poke the bear. Especially when that bear is Steph Curry trying to break out of a shooting slump.

In Monday’s 122-108 win over the Rockets, 21-year-old Houston guard Kevin Porter Jr. got Steph going with some trash talk. Curry responded by dropping a career-best 21 points in the fourth quarter en route to a 40 burger.

Warriors president/general manager Bob Myers joined 95.7 The Game’s “The Morning Roast: Executive Show” for his bi-weekly appearance Tuesday and said he wouldn’t have been happy if a young Warriors player tried to do what Porter did Monday night. You can listen to the full interview above.

“I don’t think you should bother him,” Myers told hosts Bonta Hill and Joe Shasky. “Some guys, you don’t wanna get going. I think Steph, his response was not one you want if you’re a Houston fan. It’s entertaining, I guess. If one of our young guys got some superstar going and we lost – I dunno if I’d like that. But if you’re on the other end of it, then yeah.”

Curry struggled with his shot in January and finished the month just 38.5 percent from the field and 32.9 percent from 3-point land while averaging 22.3 points per game. But his 40-point explosion Monday was his most since a 46-point effort against the Memphis Grizzlies on Dec. 23.

“Hopefully February 1 is the beginning of him getting on a run, which he is fully capable of,” Myers said. “As he goes, we go, in the postseason for sure. Thankfully over the time that he’s been a little off, other guys have stepped up. You see [Andrew] Wiggins.”

While Myers joined the Warriors when Curry was already part of the team, he was the key shot-caller in the 2020 trade that sent D’Angelo Russell to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Wiggins and a draft pick that ended up being exciting rookie Jonathan Kuminga.

Last week, Wiggins was named an All-Star starter alongside Curry.

“I think he’s in a situation now that feels more comfortable for him,” Myers said. “It’s not a secret, if you’re happy at work, you’re probably going to perform better. He’s playing the best he’s ever played right now.”

Myers said Wiggins’ humility showed once he found out he earned his first career All-Star bid.

“I talked to him that day and he said, ‘I don’t even know how to feel,’” Myers said. “I said, ‘You should feel confident. That’s what you should feel.’”

Draymond Green is currently out with a calf/back injury but he has a chance to be named to the All-Star reserves once they are announced Thursday.

“What a great group to have representing your city and your organization,” Myers said.
