Steve Kerr explains what Jimmy Butler brings that Warriors have 'never had'

The Warriors have a little pep in their step since acquiring Jimmy Butler. It's only two games, but it's evident that Stephen Curry and the rest of the roster has been reinvigorated by his addition heading into the incoming All-Star break.

With that in mind, Steve Kerr joined Willard and Dibs Tuesday and discussed the impact that Butler has made immediately on the team.

Kerr said that his knowledge and foundation of fundamentals for the game is a difference maker.

"When he's on your team, and you get to watch the tape and you see all the little things that he does, and it makes sense," Kerr said. "Because he's not a guy who jumps off the page like other players in the league who are maybe more athletic or better shooters or whatever. It's just, it's the totality of the package with Jimmy. It's incredible IQ, the amazing fundamentals."

He went on to single out one facet of Butler's game that the Warriors have never had: free throws. Kerr said that aspect has helped calm the Warriors in key moments down the stretch, at times they've typically struggled this season.

"Just based on who he is, he automatically controls the game," Kerr said. "It's really interesting. I mean, all we did was give him three or four plays that we run, a couple out of bounds plays, and that's it. We had a shootaround, one shootaround in the last three days, and no practice time other than that, and it didn't matter, like, he just knows how to play. And there's a tempo, and a pace that he plays at, never gets sped up, and it's not impacting the number of threes we're taking.

"I think it's improving our shot quality, but the biggest thing is his ability to pass and manipulate defenses means Steph and Buddy, Moses, they're getting better looks on the back end of possessions, much Steph did in the early years with Andre [Iguodala] and Sean Livingston, guys like that who just had great feel like Jimmy. So our possessions seemed cleaner, and then the ability to get to the line, which is something we've frankly never had since I've been here, I think 28 free throws in two games, amazing, the calming effect that free throws have on on a game. And Jimmy is bringing all of that to the table and more."
