Kevin Durant took to Twitter Friday morning to respond to a clip of ESPN's favorite bombastic personality, Stephen A. Smith for taking a jab at Durant's legacy. In the clip, Smith says if the Brooklyn Nets don't win the NBA title this season, he will be more recognized for being the guy who took off to the Bay Area to join Steph Curry on a loaded Warriors team.
“If [the Nets] do not win a championship. … Kevin Durant is on the verge for being recognized more so for the guy that left Steph Curry to go with Kyrie Irving, than he is for the two chips and two finals MVP," Smith said.
Durant, first responded to the video on Twitter, calling Smith's comments, "egregious." Smith then doubled down on his statements during NBA Countdown by saying he means no disrespect to KD, but still stood his ground on his previous opinion on how Durant's legacy would be affected without a title this year. Even Durant's mom Wanda went after Smith on Twitter and Stephen A. apologized.
The Nets star decided to respond to Smith's comments yet again and this time he had a lot more to say. He called the ESPN personality a "hater" and called him out for his platform on the network to push his own personal vendetta against him.
"Steve, since u decided to use ESPN to push your personal agendas," Durant said on Twitter early Sunday morning. "I'm sure your minions will run with this story for you, but if u believe this is what my career is defined by then you just a flat-out hater. It’s gonna be hard to box the god in."
It led to a lengthy retort from Smith.
No matter what happens to KD this season with the Nets, he will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer regardless of what Smith or any other prominent basketball media member thinks.
The Nets sure could use him right now. Durant is still sidelined with a sprained MCL, having been MIA since Jan. 15. Brooklyn has lost eight in a row following Sunday's 124-104 defeat against Denver.
