The Nets made NBA history early Thursday morning, and not in the best way.
By trading Kevin Durant to the Suns, Brooklyn became the first team in league history that a team had two All-Stars on its roster, and traded both away before the season ended, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
Durant and Kyrie Irving, both starters in the upcoming All-Star Game (though Durant will sit out as he recovers from an MCL injury), were traded away just days apart, bringing an end to the team’s superteam experiment, and perhaps more mind-boggling to Gio, blowing up a roster that was near the top of the conference standings and looking to make a playoff run.
“This has to be the first time ever. I’ve been looking searching, the first time ever that a team that has been as a high as second in the Eastern Conference standings…has traded away two superstars when they were in prime playoff position,” Gio said.
“This team is probably still gonna go to the playoffs…both these guys bailed!”
Brooklyn is currently fifth in the conference, but with just 2.5 games separating them from third. Durant was set to return, and the team was expected to get a big boost in getting their star back. Instead, it’s all been blown up.
