Report: Klay Thompson to practice at full speed in 'month or so'

Klay Thompson’s rehab looks to be right on schedule.

NBA insider Shams Charania of Stadium reported Thursday that the Warriors star guard will be cleared for full practice “over the next month or so” as he works back from two full seasons missed due to injury.

“I’m told Klay Thompson will be cleared for full practice over the next month or so,” Charania said. “From there it’s just going to be about him ramping up, him rehabbing, continuing to figure out at what pace do they want to bring him back. And when do they feel comfortable with him back?”

Thompson tore his right Achilles’ tendon shortly before the 2020-21 season tipped off after missing the 2019-20 campaign with a left ACL injury.

A few weeks ago, Warriors general manager Bob Myers said Thompson would need some high-intensity scrimmages and maybe even some work in the G League before rejoining the Dubs. Myers said the team is targeting “maybe January” for a return.

Even if Thompson does return to full speed in a month, Charania reiterated that he will likely need a lengthy high-level rehab.

“It’s not just going to be, he gets cleared for practice after two major injuries and then just goes into playing,” Charania said. “There will be a ramp-up period. I would look somewhere in the December-January range for his return. But the Warriors will be cautious.

“They’ve been doing a lot of data and science, and leaning a lot on data and science, I’m told. I would expect them to continue to do that. But for him to be cleared for full practice over the next month, that is optimistic news.”

For what it’s worth, Thompson still showed his picture-perfect stroke in practice on Wednesday.

Thompson was among the seafaring Warriors crew who was getting ready for Thursday night’s epic NLDS Game 5 matchup between the Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers. If all goes according to plan, he could be on the hardwood splashing with his shipmates in just weeks.
