Report: Warriors host Tyreke Evans for second workout

The Warriors are reportedly interested in Tyreke Evans and brought him to San Francisco for a second workout after watching him in Miami at a previous workout, according to The Athletic. Anthony Slater and Shams Charania shared the news in the third quarter of Tuesday night’s Warriors-Clippers game at Chase Center.

According to Slater, Evans was in attendance for the game. Coupled with the celebrities like Jackie Moon and former baseball stars Alex Rodriguez and David Ortiz, it was a who’s who of high-profile attendees on Tuesday night.

No offense to Moon, but only Evans could actually have an impact on the franchise in the future. The 2010 NBA Rookie of the Year hasn’t played since 2019 after serving a two-year suspension due to testing positive for “drugs of abuse.” The NBA reinstated Evans on Feb. 14.

Now the 32-year-old could try to revive his career with a contender for the postseason. Evans spent the first four seasons of his career with the Sacramento Kings before bouncing around with the New Orleans Pelicans, Kings again, Memphis Grizzlies and Indiana Pacers. Evans last played for the Pacers in 2018-19, averaging 10.2 points and 2.4 assists per game while shooting 38.9 percent from the floor and 35.6 percent from 3-point range.

For his career, Evans totes averages of 15.7 points, 4.8 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game. As Slater noted, Warriors general manager Bob Myers used to represent Evans as an agent, so the two parties are familiar with one another.

If the Warriors were to sign Evans during the regular season he would be playoff-eligible, but the team would have to off-load someone else. Evans could slot in as a backup point guard for the Warriors, who could have some redundant wing players in Juan Toscano-Anderson and Damion Lee buried on the bench now that rookies Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody have worked their way into the rotation. Big man Nemanja Bjelica could also be on the chopping block with the imminent returns of Draymond Green and James Wiseman.
