For once, something Steph Curry did was too good to be true.
Curry has mesmerized Dub Nation for 14 years now with his otherworldly displays on the basketball court and beyond. There’s a reason why he was named 2022 Sportsperson of the Year by Sports Illustrated on Tuesday.
So when a doctored clip surfaced recently of Curry making five straight one-handed shots from 90 feet away, many got duped. But it was soon thereafter revealed as an edited video (S/O to SI’s video producer Ari Fararooy for tricking us all).
Following Monday night’s 112-104 loss to the Indiana Pacers, Curry and the Dubs had some fun discussing the viral video, which has been viewed nearly 30 million times on Twitter alone.
“I’ll let them be the judge of that,” Curry said tongue-in-cheek about the legitimacy of the video. “But it’s an ultimate compliment to probably amazed by it, but not think it’s outlandish that it could be real. But we had some fun with it. The Sports Illustrated team coming with some heat. But I did make two of ‘em in case anybody was wondering.”
Curry used the opportunity to give himself a hard time, as he went just 3-of-17 from the field for a season-low 12 points on Monday.
“I used ‘em all then, but I didn’t make any tonight,” Curry said.
Fararooy also shared an alternate angle of the fake video, which looks just as good as the original.
Klay Thompson, Curry’s longtime Splash Brother, said he wasn’t surprised that a lot of people thought the viral clip was legit.
“(People believe) that he's the greatest to ever shoot it,” Thompson said.
Steve Kerr also weighed in on the topic, joking, “I knew it was fake when he made five in a row. Three in a row, he could do that.”
After SI named him Sportsperson of the Year on Tuesday, they shared another trick shot video, which Fararooy claimed is “definitely real.”
Suuuure, Sports Illustrated. We’ll believe you again.
