Steph Curry might be one of the greatest basketball players ever, but he’s not above being a fan.
Steph has cultivated an image as a humble superstar in his first 13 years in the league and he showed why on Tuesday night. Curry turned into Pat Spencer’s biggest fan during the Warriors’ 131-98 preseason blowout of the Portland Trail Blazers.
At one point, Steph was with NBC Sports Bay Area broadcasters Bob Fitzgerald and Kelenna Azubuike while watching Spencer throw down a dunk in traffic. He clearly liked what he saw.
"He had one two games ago, and he got this one!" Curry said. "That's what I'm talking about."
After the game, Spencer shared a hilarious recollection of the dunk.
“I honestly didn’t think I was gonna dunk it,” Spencer said. “I got a step on him, he closed out pretty hard and when I took off – I don’t wanna say I blacked out – but I didn’t think I was gonna dunk it to be honest. The crowd reaction was great. I think the best thing that happens is when the bench gets hyped for you. Having your teammates that you’ve been working with the entire summer get hyped for you. It was a cool moment.”
Spencer, who once was recognized as the top college lacrosse player in the nation, has to be viewed as a major longshot to secure the 15th and final roster spot for the Warriors by opening night. Still, Steph was cheering for him like crazy.
Curry was on the bench during another sequence to end the first quarter, when Spencer hit a bucket, got a steal and nearly made a buzzer-beater but it rimmed out.
There are different ways to lead, but Steph’s displays of camaraderie can only help boost the locker room morale in the midst of the Draymond Green-Jordan Poole drama.
