Steph Curry tells TNT he expects to return Sunday vs. Lakers

After a couple of successful scrimmages this week, Warriors superstar Steph Curry is targeting a return to the floor on Sunday against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Chris B. Haynes of TNT shared the news during the second quarter of Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

This report jives with what Warriors coach Steve Kerr told reporters before the game, as he said Curry “looks good” in his return to 5-on-5 action. Steph scrimmaged with the Santa Cruz Warriors on Tuesday and scrimmaged again on Thursday morning.

“He’s been working really hard,” Kerr said. “Within days of the injury, he was on the bike and it was impressive just watching him on the bike, just how hard guys. He’s really amazing when it comes to his conditioning level and his commitment to keeping it high. He’s had a good chance these last few days to get up and down. Before that he was doing a lot of 1-on-0 workouts that included a lot of running and movements. He’s getting close, for sure.”

Steph hasn’t played since injuring his left knee driving to the hoops against the Dallas Mavericks on Feb. 4. He was out Thursday and is set to miss Friday’s contest against the New Orleans Pelicans, but is on track to return after an 11-game absence. Steph also missed 11 games earlier this season after hurting his left shoulder.

So far this season, the Warriors have gone 12-12 without Curry in their lineup. He remains the engine of the offense, as he averages 29.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 4.9 3-pointers per game while shooting 42.7 percent from 3-point land.

Without Steph, his Splash Brother Klay Thompson has thrived as the main man for the offense. Over the past nine Steph-free contests, Klay is averaging 28 points and 6.1 3-pointers per game with a hot 47 percent clip from beyond the arc.

With the return of Curry, it could spell the end of major playing time for two-way player Ty Jerome, who has filled in well on bench and sported a 47-to-8 assist-to-turnover ratio.
