Five years have passed, but people don’t forget.
During a Warriors-Rockets game in 2018, TV cameras caught Chris Paul giving a fake laugh to Golden State coach Steve Kerr while heading to the bench during a timeout.
Now Kerr will be coaching the 38-year-old, who was a thorn in the side of the Warriors for the past decade-plus. During his appearance on ESPN’s NBA Today on Wednesday, Kerr addressed the viral moment and laughed it off.
“I think we were joking about traveling,” Kerr said. “He was not joking. I was joking about traveling, but he didn’t want to have any part of it.”
The Warriors faced Chris Paul on three different occasions in the playoffs from 2014-19, with Golden State winning the final two matchups. Beyond that, Paul and Steph Curry have always been viewed as rivals at the point guard position over the years.
After the offseason blockbuster that sent Jordan Poole to the Washington Wizards, Paul is a member of the Warriors, which he even joked about once holding a Golden State jersey for the first time.
“We've all hated him because we were competing, and he was so good,” Kerr said. “And now that's our guy, and we love him."
