Is there anything Steph Curry can’t do?
Steph was looking and sounding awfully presidential as the Warriors toured the White House on Tuesday. Golden State coach Steve Kerr gave Steph props and reflected on the visit during his appearance with 95.7 The Game’s “Damon & Ratto” on Wednesday.
To begin the festivities, both Kerr and Curry addressed the media in the press briefing room. Naturally, Steph knocked it out of the park.
“Steph is incredible,” Kerr told hosts Damon Bruce and Ray Ratto. “He crushes it every time he gets in front of a microphone, in front of a group of people. He’s just made to be the face of the franchise. He’s just so perfect for the job. He’s so impressive. The combination of confidence, humility and authenticity is what I think draws people to him. We’re so lucky to have him. We count our blessings every day.”
Later in the day, while the rest of the team waited in The East Room, Steph got to enter with Joe Biden to a standing ovation. That’s presidential right there.
Visiting the White House is nothing new for nine-time NBA champion Kerr. He made team trips with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s and also used to get tours from his younger brother during that era. Security was a lot more lax back in the day.
“My younger brother worked in the National Security Council,” Kerr said. “His office was actually in the White House. He was an intern there. This was like early 90s. Every time we got into town, he would call me and say, ‘Does anybody want a White House tour?’ I’d say, ‘Yeah sure.’ And he’d say, ‘Just grab four or five guys, take a cab over and I’ll meet you out front at six o’clock.’ Literally, that’s how it would work. We’d cab over there, he’d meet us at the front gate, we’d show our ID, walk through a metal detector and walk right into the White House. We took a tour, he’d take us all over. It was so different.”
A couple NBA dynasties later and Kerr is back. The Warriors have now visited the White House twice since Kerr took over as coach, as they didn’t go when Donald Trump was in office during their 2017 and 2018 titles. Kerr said it’s always an experience to go to the White House.
“When you’re in there, there’s just a reverence,” Kerr said. “You’re just so awed by the surroundings that there’s a sense of, I don’t wanna screw anything up. Just gonna behave and whatever they ask me to do, I’m gonna do. It's a pretty incredible place.”
