(WFAN) -- For the third time this season, Robinson Cano is on the injured list.
The Mets initially announced Monday they placed the 36-year-old second baseman on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain, but that diagnosis has now gotten worse. The team announced Monday evening that an MRI showed that Cano has a torn hamstring. Cano suffered the injury while running the bases in the fourth inning of the Mets' 13-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.
The injury comes just as the Mets and Cano were both on hot streaks. The Mets have won nine of their last 10 to climb back into playoff contention, and Cano was 7-for-11 (.636) in his last three games.

Surgery isn't required, but there is no timetable for Cano's return. That 10-day injured list won't be long enough for him, and he may not even be able to return this season
Cano was sent to the injured list in May with a quad strain, and then he aggravated the injury in his first game back on June 5, resulting in another IL stint.
The eight-time All-Star, who was acquired in an offseason trade with the Seattle Mariners, is batting .252 with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs this season.
The Mets recalled infielder Luis Guillorme from Triple-A Syracuse to fill Cano's roster spot. New York also called up pitcher Walker Lockett to serve as the 26th man for Monday's home doubleheader against the Marlins. The right-hander will start the second game.
