NEW YORK (WFAN.com) -- Just when you think Jacob deGrom can't get much better, Wednesday night happens.
The New York Mets ace was stellar in Miami, striking out 14 batters over seven scoreless innings and hitting a home run in a 6-4 win over the Marlins.
WFAN's Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti marveled Thursday morning over the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner's latest gem.
"It's just amazing," Esiason said at the start of the "Boomer and Gio" show. "The ability that he has just to put the ball wherever he wants to put it is something to behold. Yesterday may have been the best he's been -- and he's been great. And he was just awesome yesterday."
Said Giannotti: "He was untouchable yesterday. He was unhittable. What we're witnessing right now, what we witnessed last year and it's continued into this year, at least in the early beginning, is a master in his prime."
Giannotti said it's important that the Mets don't waste deGrom's brilliance, like they did last year when they rarely gave him run support and they finished with just a 77-85 record.
"They've got to score runs," Gio said. "The rest of the staff has to step up. This bullpen needs to be better than it was last year."
With the Mets off to a 5-1 start -- their home opener at Citi Field is scheduled for Thursday afternoon -- so far, so good on that front.
