Tim Tebow will celebrate his 33rd birthday in August. He's spent the last two seasons in the Mets organization and has yet to crack the major league roster. Tebow, however, is still inching towards his goal.
Tebow was among the non-roster players to receive an invitation to spring training, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. The Mets extended the invite to Tebow the past two seasons, where he unable to secure a spot with the big league club.
The outfielder hasn't exactly floruished in his opportunity in spring training. He tallied five hits in 45 plate appearences through the first two seasons with the Mets, striking out 19 times. Tebow drastically improved his marks in 2019, where he slashed .267 (4-for-15) and an RBI in eight games.
Tebow was assigned to the minors and found a spot on the Syracuse Mets, New York's Triple-A affiliate, during the 2019 season. He recorded 39 hits and 19 RBIs through 77 games, but Tebow's season was cut short due to a hand laceration sustained in August, where stitches were required.
It became the second straight year where Tebow was sidelined before the end of the season. In 2018, Tebow underwent surgery after he broke his hamate bone in his right hand.
Tebow's chances of playing at Citi Field could still considered a long shot, considering the depth in the Mets' outfield, but Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen was optimistic that fans could see the Heisman-winning quarterback one day.
"He’s a guy that is fueled by challenges and I think we’re excited to get him back into camp and — hopefully after a trip to Syracuse — he can prove to us and everybody in baseball that he can make an impact in the big leagues," Van Wagenen said in Feb. 2019, via The Washington Post.
Other notable invitees include pitching prospects David Peterson and Kevin Smith, who rank No. 7 and No. 12 respectively in the Mets organization, according to MLB Pipeline.
