Giants running back Saquon Barkley appears to be ahead of schedule in his attempt to return from a high ankle sprain.

Although he didn't practice Wednesday, Barkley was seen in uniform and on the field, participating in light individual drills. During workouts open to the media, Barkley showed an ability to run lightly and change directions. The Giants' star running back appeared comfortable, but did not run any drills at full speed.

Barkley injured his ankle during the Giants' Week 3 win against the Buccaneers and reports indicated the star running back could miss up to eight weeks. His surprising appearance on the practice field after missing just one full game made it clear the Giants have a different timeline for Barkley's rehab.

"Some people's doctors had him at eight weeks. Not my doctors," head coach Pat Shurmur said Wednesday. Although unlikely, Shurmur was non-commital when asked if Barkley could return as early as this Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. Big Blue has a quick turnaround after Sunday, playing Thursday night in New England.

Even without Barkley, the Giants offense has shown improvement the last two weeks with rookie starting quarterback Daniel Jones under center. As wide receiver Golden Tate returns from a four-game PED suspension this week, the Giants would love to get Barkley back soon to see how far their offense can go.
