Minshew Mania, at least for the time being, is over.
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone announced Tuesday that when the Jaguars return from their bye week in Week 11, Gardner Minshew II will return to backing up Nick Foles.
Foles will be eligible to return from injured reserve, which he was placed on after suffering a broken collarbone on a touchdown pass in the team's Week 1 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs:
The Jaguars inked Foles to a four-year/$88 million deal that guaranteed him $50 million this past offseason. In parts of eight seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, then-St. Louis Rams, Kansas City Chiefs and the Jaguars, Foles has tossed 69 touchdowns to 33 interceptions. He's never started more than 11 games in a season, though, a trend that will continue for at least another season.
That said, these are the types of moments that Foles was seemingly built for. The Jaguars are 4-5, with the 6-3 Houston Texans and 5-3 Indianapolis Colts ahead of them in the AFC South. But the Jaguars first game after the bye week will be against the Colts, who they will play twice before the season is out.
Things may be lining up for more Foles magic.
In addition to leading the Eagles to their first Super Bowl title in franchise history two years ago, Foles again stepped in for an injured Carson Wentz late in the 2018 season, ultimately helping the Eagles to sneak into the postseason and defeat the Chicago Bears in the NFC Wild Card round.
Despite the financial commitment to Foles, there certainly were some that thought the Jaguars should proceed with Minshew as their starting quarterback. In addition to becoming a cult hero, Minshew has tossed 13 touchdowns to just four interceptions in parts of nine games in 2019. The rookie out of Washington St. looked like a starter at times, something that Foles will likely be reminded of if he struggles in his return.
