Report: Aaron Rodgers considering retirement unless Packers fix things 'to his liking'

Aaron Rodgers garnered headlines prior to the NFL Draft on Thursday when it was reported he no longer wanted to play for the Green Bay Packers, leading to rampant trade speculation.

A day later, the conversation has taken a turn to the possibility that the reigning MVP could retire.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Rodgers is seriously considering retirement as an option “unless the situation is repaired to his liking.”

If Rodgers does retire, the Packers quarterback has expressed interest in hosting the game show “Jeopardy!” full time after getting the chance to guest-host earlier this year.

However, Rodgers is still under contract with the Packers through the 2023 season; retiring would mean the 37-year-old would be forfeiting quite a bit of money.

Per Rapoport, Rodgers would have to repay the Packers $11.5 million this year and $11.5 million next season.

What exactly “repaired to Rodgers’ liking” means is still unclear. The Packers quarterback has been interested in a new contract but other reports on Thursday signaled that the issues between him and the organization may run deeper than a simple contract negotiation.

Whether that means Rodgers wants to be traded it would likely have to wait until June 2, when the cap hit the Packers would take would become more favorable.

At one point during the draft, it was speculated that the Broncos were working toward a deal to trade for Rodgers, but more credible reporting indicated the two teams were not discussing a trade as of Thursday night.
