The 49ers' defense is getting a much-needed lift.

The team announced on Wednesday that they activated cornerback Jason Verrett off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. The 49ers opened up his 21-day practice window on Oct. 5 and had until Wednesday to activate him, or else he'd miss the rest of the season. Verrett suffered a torn ACL at the beginning of the 2021 season.
Verrett will take the open roster spot vacated by running back Tevin Coleman, who was cut on Tuesday. Coleman will remain with the organization as he was signed to the team's practice squad on Wednesday.
According to David Lombardi of The Athletic, head coach Kyle Shanahan said he's "not ruling out" Verrett for the Week 8 matchup against the Rams. But Shanahan wants to see Verrett practice first before making a final decision.
When healthy, Verrett is expected to step in for cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury earlier this season.
