The 49ers are down a few players, and some for a long while. Kyle Shanahan provided injury updates Monday, following the first padded practice of training camp.
Drake Jackson a long, long ways off
Do not bet on seeing Drake Jackson any time soon. The 2022 second-round pick has been injury plagued throughout his young career and is coming off patellar tendon surgery. It cannot be understated just how down Kyle Shanahan was on the prospects of him playing any time soon.
He has no chance to make an appearance in training camp. The tone had no hint of optimism. Here's what Shanahan said:
"We don't have a timeline," Shanahan said. "I know it won't be any time in camp. We gotta see how rehab goes... I mean any time you do that type of surgery that he had -- McGlinchey had a similar one -- those are big surgeries, so it's tough to come back from. You never know how they're going to react. It was always a possibility it would take a long time, and it's taking a long time."
Shanahan said the 49ers "knew that coming in" with Jackson and pointed to the additions of Yetur Gross-Matos and Leonard Floyd, saying the 49ers feel as good "if not better" now about the defensive end group as when camp started.
Hamstrings, hamstrings, hamstrings (and Spencer Burford)
Ricky Pearsall: The rookie made his training camp debut Monday after suffering a hamstring injury away from the facility and ending up on the NFI list. He wasn't involved in 11-on-11s, but Kyle Shanahan said the team wanted to see how he came through Monday's practice and the hope is for him to participate fully Tuesday.
Jacob Cowing, Tay Martin: The two receivers have been out since last week. Martin went out after the first practice and Cowing after the second. Shanahan said that they were given a "10-day guess" after their injuries, "so hopefully sometime next week," they'll return.
Isaac Guerendo: "Isaac was worse" than Cowing and Martin, Shanahan said. "That's going to be a few weeks."
Spencer Burford had a sizable hand wrap after suffering a broken hand and did not participate. Shanahan said he is seeing the final doctor for an evaluation Monday and would have an update the next time he speaks.
