The 49ers returned to practice Friday after a day off with a new signing in the building. That new signing was immediately injured.
Kyle Shanahan said after practice that center Pat Elflein, a veteran who has struggled with injuries his entire career since being drafted 70th overall in 2017, suffered a calf injury. Shanahan said it's likely a pulled calf.
Elsewhere, Aaron Banks is dealing with back spasms but should return "real soon." Dominick Puni has been getting reps at right guard with Banks and Jon Feliciano both out. Feliciano, dealing with a knee injury, returned to practice Friday in limited capacity.
Logan Thomas has a hamstring injury, something he's dealt with multiple times throughout his career. It's an interesting situation with the tight end room open for competition behind George Kittle and Brayden Willis currently projecting as the No. 2 option.
Jauan Jennings, meanwhile, is dealing with an ankle injury, but should return soon.
Jon Feliciano made a limited return to practice, and Spencer Burford also returned with a hand wrap. Kyle Shanahan said that after consulting multiple doctors, Burford will eschew surgery.
